We now have the ability to offer our customers hosting services through 100% renewable energy. The datacenter that houses some of our servers is run from renewable energy.
Due to the infrastructure and geographical distribution of the datacenter, the center itself couldn't install solar panels or construct wind turbines outside. However, through an audit of our servers, the datacenter calculated the electricity usage of the servers and then purchased "Green Energy Tags" to compensate for the usage. These energy tags are energy credits used toward energy consumption of devices in a grid that can have non-renewable energy fed into it.. The tags have been certified by Green-e, the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy.
As such our servers in the datacenter are still powered by the regular electricity providers - but for every "X" kilowatts worth of green energy tags we purchase, "X" kilowatts less electricity is fed into the electricity grid via non-renewable means. The solar & wind generated electricity we purchased, is fed back into a power grid and powers other devices that would have otherwise used electricity made from non-renewable energy source. In our case, this green energy is fed into the grid of Portland, Oregon.
When everything is said and done, the result is the same - carbon neutral web hosting.
